Importance: Policy briefs are a specific type of research statement that focus on an issue at hand. There have been a few embedded in the Nearpod lectures throughout the semester, and this assignment will allow you to write your own. What is a policy brief? A policy brief is a combination of a short research paper and an argument for a specific social policy or program. You need to provide an abstract, an introduction to your topic that includes research-based information, an argument as to why your program is needed, and a conclusion. If you look at the examples below, policy briefs look more like newsletters than usual papers. Use a newsletter template provided in Word to achieve this look, and incorporate graphics as they relate to your policy or program. Then intent of a policy brief is to inform politicians, legislators, lobbyists, and at times the general public about a social issue that needs to be addressed through policy. Examples can be found at: http://hdfs.missouri.edu/cfpr/briefs.htmlLinks to an external site. http://schubert.case.edu/publications/policy-briefs/Links to an external site. Expectation: Create a policy or social program that you think would benefit your community – think locally or regionally for this assignment! Write a policy brief that details the need of your program, including research-based information and unbiased language. Detail the program you would like to see implemented and the rationale for the program. Grading Breakdown: • Title and abstract summarize your topic in a concise way • Introduction uses research-based material to describe the topic • An argument as to why the program is needed is presented and supported with research • A conclusion wraps up your policy brief in a clear and cohesive way • Paper is formatted correctly for a policy brief in a newsletter manner that is visually attractive, easy to read, uses proper spelling and grammar, and is 2-3 pages long • Uses APA format for citations and references

Also share with them what big educational issues/challenges that you hope to address in your career, and encourage them to find their own passions in this program. This can be written in informal language, but do keep it professional like a mentor might talk to a younger mentee.
